Where do creativity and inspiration hide when it looks like the world is ending? Ask Bay Area artist Marshall Holland – they’ve been with him this whole time. After staying close to home during the global pandemic lockdown, Holland has emerged with a shiny new album, Paper Airplane, which lands on 9/4/2020.
It has been six years since Holland’s last album of accessible singer-songwriter pop (2014’s Marshall Holland and the Etceteras), and a scant five months since the release of his Japanese electronica field trip album, Nice to Meet You. In March of 2020, facing a day-job layoff and the encroaching lockdown, Holland says, “With the heartaches of
the world tragically suffering, and the power of current affairs, some overwhelming energy came to me, to write new songs and put out an album. It wasn’t by choice, but more of a creative impulse, to add something to the world.”
The world can be thankful for the art that was created. Though almost to the point of succumbing to the anxiety and sadness of quarantine times, Holland suddenly fell under a creative spell, while contemplating his own life and death. The result is a remarkable album, which, while reminiscent of the past, is firmly rooted in the present. Paper Airplane is a sonic mélange of late 1960s pop inflection (à la bands such as The Left Banke and The Monkees) and the singer-songwriter sounds of the early ’70s, peppered with elements of power pop to drive it all home.
The artist draws the listener in with the drum-heavy lead off track, “Our Fate”, amid echoes of British New Wave. The mood shifts as Holland takes us through the pensive tones of songs like "When the Rain Comes”, "Waiting for that Peace & Love", and "A Hand Holds a Bird" – all standout tracks. The album’s title song, “Paper Airplane”, scoops up the listener and takes them on a loving flight of imagination, to a long-lost childhood.
Expertly performed by Holland (who plays all of the instruments), Paper Airplane is a must-hear record. By its creation, it is the sound of isolation, the voice of confinement, the impossible embrace. But within, are songs that acknowledge the hard facts of life and provide hopeful reassurance.
