All Instrumentation and vocals by Marshall Holland
This song was originally performed by The Agents, a band from Monterey County, California during the early 1980s.
This song was written by Michael Brooks, the lead singer, guitarist, and main songwriter of the band. Long story short, my dad (Mike Holland) was the lead guitarist for this group, so this is how close to the band I am. Their music was one of the first I heard as a child and a major influence, indeed.
Brooks has written many great songs; he's a great songwriter, and has always been a great friend of our family. If it wasn't for Mike I probably wouldn't be influenced enough to start writing songs at an early age. So recording this rendition and adding it to the album is an honor.
I always liked the message of this one and the version of mine was heading toward the direction I wanted to go with the album, and I believe it fits perfectly. Great song, I had to put it at the top. I'd like to do a whole album of his songs if I could and "marshallize" them like this one.
lyrics
We start our lives out so gallantly
So young in our hearts and minds
Then we gaze upon our destiny
With a rage of fire in our eyes
That lies so carefully
Each step along the way
It strikes up down within our dreams
And guides us through the day
Some how it all would be worthwhile
Saving up for old in our lives
To build our lives
Struggle along now so patiently
Everyday from 9-to-5
And build a home on broken dreams
That somehow crumbled in the night
All you learned is useless now
To the young man next in line
All you gave is lost somehow
On the corners of your mind
Somehow your life has past you by
Traded it for old at 65
At 65, etc.
Somehow your life has past you by
Traded it for old at 65
At 65, etc.
